About Pocket Diapers |
Pocket Diapers are an ingenious invention that allow babies to be cloth diapered without wetness against the skin. A micro-fleece or micro-suede inner lining allows wetness to pass through to an absorbent layer inside. The outer is a waterproof material, usually poly-urethane laminate, that holds wetness in.
Why a pocket? This design allows you to separate the layers so that they wash better and dry faster. Happy Heiny's and Swaddebees pocket diapers may be washed on hot. Wash bumGenius! on warm. We recommend you hang dry pocket diapers for the longest life.
Velcro/Aplix or Snap? Velcro or Aplix works the most like a disposable diaper, so it is easiest for grandparents and daycare providers to use. You can adjust it very finely, so you never have to worry about an 'in between' stage. However, Velcro/Aplix does show some wear over time. If you want to minimize lint getting stuck in the hooks - wash with other covers only. Snaps have their own advantages and disadvantages. Snaps wear well - in most cases they look exactly the same after hundreds of washes. They also allow you to adjust the waist and leg openings independently.
Pocket diapers are highly recommended as night diapers. It may be a bit bulky, but try an Infant-sized Prefold as the insert at bedtime. This combination is hard to beat when it comes to night duty for heavy wetters. [Note: An Infant-sized Prefold is too big to fit size Small pocket diapers, for those you can simply put two custom-shaped inserts in at night.]
Additional Care Instructions - Always use a new pocket diaper at each diaper change, do not reuse. Store pocket diapers in a dry pail. Make sure to fold over any Velcro or Aplix tabs to the laundry tabs provided before you launder them. Do NOT use bleach, fabric softener, or diaper rash lotion containing fish oil.
